Tommy‘s Stockings

TWO little maids went out one day, And really it was shocking ! They met poor Tommy on the way, With holes in either stocking. They sat down on a low stone seat, And to and fro kept rocking, While they knitted, swift and neat, Each of them a stocking. And sweet they sang a little song, The dickie-birds kept mocking ; And Tommy wished that all day long They'd sit and knit a stocking.

THE Fiddler

THE fiddler played upon his fiddle All through that leafy June, He always played hey-diddle-diddle, And played it out of tune. And down the hill the children came, And down the valley too : I never heard the fiddler's name, So cannot tell it you. Hey-diddle-diddle, diddle-diddle-dee. On on they came, and when they heard That tune so swift and sweet, They did not say a single word, But shuffled with their feet. Then round they went, and round and round, All to that cracked old fiddle, And still was heard the magic sound, Hey-diddle-diddle-didd, Hey-diddle-diddle, diddle-diddle-dee.

The Rabbit – Rabbit Poem

THE moon is shining o'er the field, A little breeze is blowing, The radish leaves are crisp and green, The lettuces are growing. The owl is in the ivy-bush, With both his eyes a-winking ; The rabbit shakes his little tail, And sits him down a-thinking-- "Oh ! where are all the dormice gone ? And are the frogs a-vooing ? Will no one come to play with me ? What are they all a-doing ?" Poor little rabbit, all alone, Don't let the master meet you ; He'll shoot you with his little gun, And merrily he'll eat you !

Watching

DEAR father's ship is very near, We'll blow him kisses, baby dear, He may come home to-day. A happy wind that journeys south Seems just to linger round my mouth, Then bear a kiss away. Come, baby, I will hold you-so, We'll watch the waves that outward go, And call, "Come back to-day !" For father's heart seems always near, And who can tell but he may hear, Or know the words we say? All round and up the cottage wall The honeysuckle's grown so tall, It sees above the gate ; The flowers came hurrying up so sweet - We told the little seeds they'd meet Dear father, and they wait. We first shall see a speck of white, Far, far away, there where the light Has swept the morning dim; So silent will his coming seem, Twill be like waking from a dream To wave our hands to him. And then, and then he'll hoist you high, Just stopping here and there To shake the neighbours by the hand, And tell...

Swinging - Poem for Kids

SWING, swing, swing, Through the drowsy afternoon ; Swing, swing, swing, Up I go to meet the moon. Swing, swing, swing, I can see as I go high Far along the crimson sky ; I can see as I come down The tops of houses in the town ; High and low, Fast and slow, Swing, swing, swing. Swing, swing, swing, See ! the sun is gone away ; Swing, swing, swing, Gone to make a bright new day. Swing, swing, swing. I can see as up I go The poplars waving to and fro, I can see as I come down The lights are twinkling in the town, High and low, Fast and slow, Swing, swing, swing.

Change Yourself and not The World

Long ago, people lived happily under the rule of a king. The people of the kingdom were very happy as they led a very prosperous life with an abundance of wealth and no misfortunes. Once, the king decided to go visiting places of historical importance and pilgrim centres at distant places. He decided to travel by foot to interact with his people. People of distant places were very happy to have a conversation with their king. They were proud that their king had a kind heart. After several weeks of travel, the king returned to the palace. He was quite happy that he had visited many pilgrim centres and witnessed his people leading a prosperous life. However, he had one regret. He had intolerable pain in his feet as it was his first trip by foot covering a long distance. He complained to his ministers that the roads weren’t comfortable and that they were very stony. He could not tolerate the pain. He said that he was very much worried about the people who had to walk along those r...

A Christmas Surprise

It was two days before Christmas. Harry, Cornelius, Monty and I were busy building a snowman when Fritz appeared with his little niece Emily and introduced her. “Emily is from the South and has never seen snow before,” Fritz told us. “She doesn’t know much about our winters.” It turned out that Emily didn’t know much about Christmas also. ”Who is Santa Claus, Waldo?” she asked me, shivering in the cold air. “Santa Claus,” I explained, “brings presents and toys to human children at Christmas time.” “Does he bring presents to animal children also?” Emily asked. “Well,” I said, “he hasn’t been around this part of the forest for many years. I guess he is too busy visiting all the human children to have much time left for animals.” “Do you think he will come if I write to him?” Emily asked. “I don’t think so,” said Monty. “I’ve never seen him, myself.” “Neither have I,” Harry added, shaking his head. “You see. Santa Claus is only for human children,” Fritz said to Emily....

Cocoon and the Butterfly

Many of us know that a beautiful and colourful butterfly comes from an unappealing worm! Here is the story of a butterfly that was never able to live its life as a normal butterfly. One day, a man saw a cocoon. He loved butterflies and had a craze for its wonderful combination of colours. In fact, he used to spend a lot of time around butterflies. He knew how a butterfly would struggle to transform from an ugly caterpillar into a beautiful one. He saw the cocoon with a tiny opening. It meant that the butterfly was trying to make its way out to enjoy the world. He decided to watch how the butterfly would come out of the cocoon. He was watching the butterfly struggling to break the shell for several hours. He spent almost more than 10 hours with the cocoon and the butterfly. The butterfly had been struggling very hard for hours to come out through the tiny opening. Unfortunately, even after continuous attempts for several hours, there was no progress. It seemed that the butterfly h...

A Merchant and his Donkey

One beautiful spring morning, a merchant loaded his donkey with bags of salt to go to the market, in order to sell the salt. The merchant and his donkey were walking along together. They had not walked far when they reached a river on the way. Unfortunately, the donkey slipped and fell into the river. As it scrambled up the bank of the river, it noticed that the bags of salt loaded on his back had become lighter. There was nothing the merchant could do except return home, where he loaded his donkey with more bags of salt. As they reached the slippery riverbank again, the donkey fell into the river, this time deliberately. Thus the salt was wasted again. By now the merchant knew the donkey’s trick. He wanted to teach the animal a lesson. As he returned home the second time with the donkey, the merchant loaded bags of sponges on its back. The duo set out on their trip to the market a third time. On reaching the river, the donkey very cleverly fell into the water again. But now,...
